Torch Run 2016

Georgetown, MA June 6, 2016 – TransCOR proudly sponsored three Georgetown, Mass. police cruisers in the Cruiser Convoy of the Special Olympics Torch Run (LETR) held last Saturday throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The North Shore Convoy – beginning in Danvers, Mass. with more than thirty police cruisers and motorcycles, and the TransCOR Interceptor – made stops along each route where additional vehicles joined in. Convoys originating at multiple points throughout Massachusetts converged at the Harvard University Athletics Fields, home of the Massachusetts Special Olympics Summer Games.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a year-round fundraising and awareness building program, designed to give members of the law enforcement community an opportunity to support Special Olympics athletes who live, work, and compete in their local communities.

Since 1981, when Wichita, Kansas Police Chief Richard LaMunyon saw an urgent need to increase awareness of the Special Olympics, members of law enforcement were bestowed the honor and responsibility of being the Guardians of the Flame. What began simply as escorting the Flame of Hope on its journey across the state to the Opening Ceremonies of Summer Games, Winter Games and all other athletic competitions, has now turned into one of the largest grassroots fundraising programs in the organization. Today the LETR program is growing at an incredible rate, with all 50 states and more than 35 countries actively participating in the program. And 2014 saw 85,000 members of law enforcement unite in order to raise over $50 million for Special Olympics progra\ms worldwide.

In Massachusetts more than 1,000 members of the state’s Law Enforcement community participated in events organized through the LETR program, which raised over $550,000 in 2015.
